Impressions of Dalehead, 2010 ...
A new observing location in the picturesque Peak District National Park.
Chris Hill set up his 80mm Scopos which revealed lots of faint treasures which most of us cannot see with large scopes in our light polluted suburbs. This reinforced Chris's view that dark skies are most important for deep sky viewing. We all saw the brightening of Algol as Saturday evening progressed. I spotted Vesta through binoculars as it neared Gamma Leonis.
It was cold at night but the days were sunny and warm. The views from the accommodation are amazing and the walking opportunities are excellent. Quite a few members dropped in on both nights, welcomed by a log fire and hot chocolate. The second night was very clear. Richard Lowe found Vesta in the constellation of Leo. Malc Beesley spent 4 hours getting fish eye images of the sky as it went dark. The sky is not as dark as at Hardraw, but the location is much nearer with an evening visits a possibility.
A small group of us paid a weekday visit. The location was perfect but getting the telescopes into the field was tricky. It is not as dark as Hardraw but you get a 360 degree sky as compensation. Not a cloud was to be seen for the whole evening so it was extremely cold with the telescopes icing up. Malc Beesley went off to several nearby sites to take whole sky images with the 5D Canon and fish-eye lens.
