Observation reports - Stoke-on-Trent ...

Reading about other people's experiences at the eyepiece of a telescope often inspires us to view the glory of the night sky. Go forth and explore ...!

15/07/04 - Meteor observation

The evening looked so promising, so I took the opportunity to monitor the level of meteor activity now we are approaching the start of the 'meteor season'. The main difficulty was twilight at this time of year, and it was only dark enough to start observing at 23:00UT (00:00BST).

The first meteor was seen at 23:09, a fast, mag 1 sporadic seen in the Cygnus area. The second meteor at 23:36 was a medium speed, magnitude 4 sporadic in Cygnus. 13 minutes later another mag.4 medium speed, sporadic was recorded in the Cygnus-Draco region. I was keeping a look out for meteors from the Capricorn and Sagittid radiants, but none were recorded in the one hour watch from 23:00 to 00:00 UT. The limiting stellar magnitude was 5.5.

Not a very productive observing session, but even these nights need monitoring.

ImageJuly and August updates ...

The bright twilight nights are slowly giving way to darker skies and the prospect of revealing a little-known nightly sight.
Away from the towns and cities, the Milky Way will soon be glimpsed meandering through the constellation of Cygnus. This river of stars was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians ... Nowadays, especially when we approach the end of Summer, it's astronomers that turn their gaze skyward and praise the sight of a myriad of stars arching high above them.

The following sections have been updated: This month's night sky and observations.
