Impressions of Hardraw, September 03 - 05, 2010 ...
As a newer member of the Society, this was my first trip to Hardraw and first light with my Celestron CPC 9.25.
As a precursor to the evening, we convened a meeting of the Macclesfield Gastronomy Society at the local chippy, before stepping out into the garden of Harris House for a night of observing under wonderfully clear skies.
I feared I'd bitten off more than I could chew with the Celestron as it's quite a hefty scope for a beginner, but everyone went out of their way to show me it is actually a breeze to set up and use.
The rest of the evening was spent on a wonderful whistle-stop tour of the night sky. It's difficult to single out a highlight - when you are looking at all these things for the first time, in good conditions, with a good telescope, everything appeared breathtaking to me! However, seeing M13 through Diana and Stephen's 31mm Nagler was particularly special. Even Jupiter looked amazing in my smaller 90mm Maskutov.
I would also like to thank Diana and Stephen for rescuing my evening with a portable hairdryer. Everyone has to learn a lesson on their first night, and mine was the need for a dew shield!
